My Calendar Kids are all about 18-inches and full of fun clothes and features.

If you have been following my blog this year, you will know that I am blogging one doll a month for FREE – but, since November isn’t here yet, Nikita is not on my blog.  Find more about The Calendar Kids on THIS POST.

Dress:

Any size #4 worsted weight yarn. I have used Red Heart Super Saver in Pumpkin Citrouille and Purple and Caron One Pound in Black.  I have used my size I/5.5mm hook for this pattern.

You will need a few buttons if you want to make a button back dress to remove and change.

Please note that your dress may vary in size from mine depending on the materials you have used and your stuffing etc.  This is more of a “formula” than a specific pattern so please feel free to adjust your numbers based on your doll.

The chain at the start of the dress should be snug on your doll.  Please adjust your size to your doll and use this as a guide.

This is a modification to Amy’s regular dress in my Amy August pattern.  I am adapting it here for the pumpkin witch dress.

Chain 23-25 (again, you may need to adjust this – make it snug) *you want the next round to be an even number.  *For Amy I have used 25.

Starting in the second chain from the hook make a sc and sc in each chain to the end. (22/24 etc)

Chain 1 and turn after each row unless stated differently.

Rows 2-12 single crochet in each stitch. *This is the bodice of the dress so if you feel you need to add another row or so please do so.  ***For Amy since she is pear shaped, I added an increase sc to each end every other row after row 4.  So, I worked straight until row 4 and then did: inc, sc to last stitch, inc.  The next row work straight.  Repeat the increases every other row if you need to make your dress bodice wider as you go down.  But, your doll may not need the increases on each end to fit.

Now, chain 1 and turn your work a half turn and work down the short side row to make a few button holes.   Your chain spaces below will be determined by the size of your buttons and your count may be a little different than mine.  This is not crucial.  Just keep it even and flat.

For me, I did this:

Sc, sc, sc, chain 3, sc, sc, sc, chain 3, sc, sc, sc chain 3, sc, sc, sc *you will be placing a sc in each row end. If you have larger buttons you may need a bigger chain. ***For Amy’s pumpkin dress I made 3 buttons holes.

Chain 1 and do a half turn.  Hdc along the bottom edge (34 is what I got for my count, but yours may vary)

Join to the other side so that you now have a circle/ring.  Keep trying on your doll to check your fit as you go to see where you may need to modify.

Chain 2 (not a stitch) and make (2dc, dc) around your circle. Join to the top of the dc and not the chain 2.

Repeat the above row again if you need. ***For Amy’s pumpkin dress I didn’t need another round of increases so I just started working straight. I worked in hdc for this dress, but you can also work dc rows.

Chain up 2 and make a dc in each stitch around. Continue in this method for the length you want your dress to be.  You can also do another round of the increases – the (2dc, dc) around if you need a fuller skirt.  Switch colors to make it colorful or add a row of sc between the dc rows in an accent color.

*on my Nikita witch doll dress, I have added a row of purple sc between each row of black dc.  Don’t cut your yarn if doing this – just carry it up the inside and change colors on the last part of the stitch before you switch your colors.

**On my Amy pumpkin witch doll dress, I have added a purple underskirt.  To do this: 3 rows before you reach the end of the length of your dress (the top color), you want to work that round in the FRONT LOOP ONLY.  Once you finish off this color, attach the underdress color to the BACK LOOP ONLY in the new color and crochet around in rounds until you reach the length you want.  You can choose sc, hdc, or dc.

This dress is a modification to the dress on my Amy August doll.  Her dress ends like this:

Chain 1 then (sc, dc, picot, sc, dc, picot) repeat around. If you are unfamiliar with a picot stitch, you can also just (sc, dc, chain 2, sc, dc, chain 2)

For the arm holes: place the dress on your doll and mark where you need the arm hole to start and stop.  On my Amy example, I needed the arm hole to start on stitch 3-4 and skip 3 stitches and stop on stitch 8-9.  So, attach yarn back at the top of the dress on the back side.  If you are using the exact numbers I have used: sc, sc, sc, chain 5, skip 3 stitches, sc 13, chain 5, skip 3, sc, sc, sc.  Chain 1 and turn.  (last row): dec sc, sc, place 5 sc in the chain 5 space, (dec sc) 3 times, sc, (dec sc) 3 times, place 5sc in the chain 5 space, sc, dec sc.  Finish off and weave in the end.

For the pumpkin witch dress, I made a Jack-O-Lantern face – it is just 3 small triangles sewn down and an embroidered mouth.  There are so many types of different Jack-O-Lantern faces so find one that you love and go for it!

You can decide to make sleeves or not.  If you do make sleeves like on the pumpkin dress, just attach the yarn to the arm hole and sc evenly around.  I had 14 sc around in my example.  Crochet evenly in sc for each row until you reach the length that you’d like.

The witch hat is worked in HDC in a continuous spiral with no joining.

For this hat, I have used RHSS yarn in purple and my size H/5mm hook.

Reminder: if I write 2sc it means make 2 sc in the same next stitch, but if I write sc 2 it means make 1 sc in the next two stitches.

Working in the CONTINUOUS Round:

*I do not join and chain, but continue to work in the next stitch. Use a stitch marker for this so you don’t lose your place.

You may prefer to do a magic circle.  If so, that is fine.

Chain 2.  Half double crochet 8 in the second chain from the hook and work over your starting tail.

Starting in the first sc make 1 sc and then 1hdc in that stitch and hdc in the next three stitches.  2hdc in the next and then hdc in the next three stitches (10) *Still work over the starting tail.

After getting done with all 10 hdc for that round, pull the starting tail to cinch up the opening.  You can now trim that tail or weave it in.

You want to move your stitch marker to the last stitch of each round so you know when you get to the end.

Round 3: hdc in each stitch around (10)

Round 4: (2hdc, hdcc 4)* around (12)

Round 5: (2hdc, hdc 5)* (14)

Round 6: (2hdc, hdc 6)* (16)

Round 7: (2hdc, hdc 7)* (18)

Round 8: (2hdc, hdc 8)* (20)

Round 9: (2hdc, hdc 9)* (22)

Round 10: (2hdc, hdc 10)* (24)

Rounds 11 – 14: continue in that established pattern until you get to 32

Round 15: (hdc 7, 2hdc)* around (36)

Round 16: (hdc 8, 2hdc)* around (40)

Round 17: (hdc 9, 2hdc)* around (44)

Round 18: (hdc 10, 2hdc)* around (48)

Round 19: (hdc 3, 2hdc)* around (60)

Rounds 20-21: hdc in each stitch around *change color to trim color on the last stitch

Round 22: sc in each stitch around

Round 23: optional: crab stitch (reverse sc) around

Finish and weave in the end.

XOXO, Kristi and Amy
