Crochet Round Purse: Stash Busting Crochet

Good afternoon Crocheters and Readers!!  I only had a few minutes today, but wanted to share this quick project that I finished up last night.

If you follow my blog, these are made with all the leftover yarns from my Stash-Busting Silk Crochet Lizards.

These are so simple!! They are made with just two crochet circles that are crocheted together leaving the top open.  I did opt to line mine with extra firm interfacing and fabric, but that part is up to you.  These are just so adorable!!  Think about all the color combinations you can make from this simple idea.

A few notes:

  1. You can make these with pretty much any type of yarn.  Yarns can be “stretchy” and pull out of shape and that is why I chose to use an interfacing to solidify my circles.  Sewing in a liner will also help keep the shape.
  2. You can also use pretty much whichever hook works best with your yarn.  I used 3 strands of my leftover silk yarn held together and my size J/6mm hook, but you may need to adjust this according to your materials and crochet style. I added in a new strand as I ran out of each scrap. Crochet over those tails to secure.
  3. The main thing to remember is that each circle of the pair needs to be the same diameter -or close.  I would suggest no more than 1/4 – 1/2 difference in the two.  After joining you can block if needed to flatten them out.
  4. These can be made any size you want!  My circles were about 7″ across.
  5. I worked my circles up to 60 sc around (see pattern for circle below).

Just in case you are not familiar with how to crochet a circle, I will put the standard circle pattern below.  I do tend to add a few stitches after every few rounds to keep the circles from becoming a “hexagon” shape which can happen if you continue to increase in the increase stitches.

Fans of my Scraptastic patterns and other stash busting series’ will hopefully LOVE this project.  These fun Darn Good Yarn cakes/skeins were in my stash for so long!!  I kept collecting my DGY silk cakes but wasn’t really using many of them, so I vowed to myself to use them up this year!!

Make 2 circles for each purse making sure to have the same number of stitches and the same diameter.

Working in the CONTINUOUS Round:

*I do not join and chain but continue to work in the next stitch. Use a stitch marker for this so you don’t lose your place if you need.

Chain 2.  (Or Magic Circle start if you prefer)

Sc 6 in the second chain from the hook and work over your starting tail.

Starting in the first sc make 2 sc in that stitch and in each stitch around. (12) *Still work over the starting tail.  After getting done with all 12 sc for that round, pull the starting tail to cinch up the opening.  You can now trim that tail or weave it in.

You want to move your stitch marker to the last stitch of each round so you know when you get to the end.

Round 3: (sc in next stitch, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (18)

Round 4: (sc in next 2 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (24)

Round 5: (sc in next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (30)

Round 6: (sc in next 4 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (36)

Round 7: (sc in next 5 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (42)

Round 8: (sc in next 6 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (48)

Round 9: (sc in next 7 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (54)

Round 10: (sc in next 8 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (60)

Round 11: (sc in next 9 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (66)

Round 12: (sc in next 10 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (72)

Round 13: (sc in next 11 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (78)

Round 14: (sc in next 12 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (84)

Round 15: (sc in next 13 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (90)

Round 16: (sc in next 14 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch) repeat (96)

This is the outside of my pairs.

I chose to line my circles (leaving the outer stitches unlined so I could crochet them together)

I used an extra firm fusible interfacing with some leftover fabric.  I sewed this to the circle to make sure it was secure.

After finishing with the lining, I crocheted the circles together leaving 20 stitches unworked for the opening – BUT when coming up to those 20 stitches, I crocheted in the 20 stitches for the front circle and then turned my purse and crocheted the 20 stitches on the back circle to finish the edging.

Leave tails when you finish and sew and weave in the end.

These are the straps that I used on my 3 examples.  I got lucky enough to find a 3-pack that worked perfectly with the colors that I had.
