Almost a year ago – as I was really trying to put a dent into my giant yarn stash – and as I was needing to switch to an item that I could sell locally in the artisan shop where I rent space – I started making some fiber wall art pieces and fiber curtains. The assortment became very popular and it was a nice switch up from doing winter work. (i.e. beanies and scarves.)
Sometimes I use dowels and sometimes curtain rods – and I’ve even done some soft ones with clothes line – but, this one might possibly be one of my favorites!
When I’m out thrifting at my local thrift stores, I am always on the lookout for nice curtain rods. This one is set now at 54″ and is a beautiful bronze color. (When they are adjustable I simply use clear packing tape – after I get them to the width I want – so they don’t come apart. Just tape around the middle carefully. You don’t want to do all the work and then have your rod come off and drop your stitches.)
What do you need?
This is most of my material list, but you can really use anything you have. The yarn I crocheted onto the rod is a #7 yarn.
I used my P/11.5mm hook
I had an adjustable curtain rod that I set to 54″
Most of my yarns are:
Red Heart Collage in Forget-Me-Not (2)
Loops & Threads Loops Boucles in Sea Salt
Lions Brand Homespun in Mixed Berries
Buttercream Thick & Thin in Anemone
Loops & Threads Indie in White
And various tan/sand color leftover bits
Crochet onto your rod (cast on) with single crochet. Make sure to have a multiple of 5 stitches. At the end you will chain up 4 and turn the entire rod. This chain up 4 counts as your first treble crochet (tr)
1 tr in each of next four stitches.
(Chain 5, skip five stitches
Tr crochet in next 5 stitches.)
Repeat to end.
Chain 9 (counts as one treble and one chain 5 space) and turn.
Skip over treble stitches from below and do 5 trebles in next chain 5 space. I just went right into the space, but if you prefer you can go into your chains.
Chain 5. Repeat your tr stitches and chains across the row to end. You are crocheting 5 stitches into each space from the round below.
Chain 5 at end and treble once into first treble from row 1.
Chain 1 turn
Sc in first stitch. Chain 4
Sc in first treble of next treble group
(Chain 3. Sc In last treble of same group
Chain 4. Sc in first treble of next group)
Repeat across
After the last chain 4, Sc in 4th chain of chain 9 from row below.
Finish off your crochet.
Now, the fun part is to just loop all your assorted yarns around your bottom row as you like. You can make it fuller or less dense or add some braided parts or bead some of the fiber etc. then trim on bottom as you like.
Hint: I use my bed post to wind the yarn around quickly all at once and then cut for the perfect length for my curtain fibers. If you don’t have this try winding around two chairs? Two post? None of those? Ask your kids to stand still and use their little bodies 🙂
