You, Me and the ABCs : Crochet ABC Toys: Extras!! F is for Fox

If you are a crocheter and have a baby or toddler, play room or nursery, and love organization and helping your child learn – this series is for you!

I have a HUGE LOT of EXTRAS!!!! Extra patterns that you can either add to your collection or substitute – for example, in my Original Series I have F is for Flower or Frog, but on this EXTRAS event, I am now giving you F is for Fox(pattern below).  Many of these extras were part of a huge baby ensemble that I did earlier and can all be found as printable PDFs from my Etsy Shop. I will post some link below.

I have already blogged B is for BirdC is for Cow , H is for Horse or P is for Pony, S is for Squirrel, R is for Racoon and G is for Goat as extras and you can find them all on my blog by clicking on each link and you can see them just below in the next photo.

I have also started the second photo below and you can find A is for Alligator and D is for Deer blogged earlier – FREE on my blog for you.

***I HAVE FINISHED THE HUGE FINAL PROJECT!!  I AM SO EXCITED TO BRING THAT TO YOU***

This EXTRA TOYS EVENT will also include Cow, Goat, Squirrel, Horse/Pony, Racoon, Alligator, Deer, Wolf, Giraffe, Lamb, Bee, Duck, Bat and Princess so far, but I am sure I will be making LOTS MORE!!!

Most of the above patterns were made as part of a huge baby bundle that I did at the beginning of this year.  You can find several different bundle sets for my baby animals in my Etsy Shop including the fox pattern that is below.  You might enjoy seeing the huge Baby Hazel gift set that I did.  The entire set is located in my ETSY SHOP HERE.

The Fox pattern (with free modification to make a Wolf) can be purchased separately from MY ETSY SHOP and on Ravelry

I have three bundles that include the fox as well:

This PDF contains the Fox/Wolf babies and my larger Flannery the Fox.

This set includes eight baby animals including the fox.

And last this huge large bundle includes ALL of the baby animals and can only be found all together HERE IN MY ETSY SHOP.

Want a fun way to use your scraps? Want to make a lot of little projects/toys that are great for little ones? Want to custom a special piece for a wee one? – and then end with one big finale? This A-Z Crochet Toy Series is for you! (And you can skip the big finale if it’s not for you and still have all the little toys and ABCs.)

I’m gonna give you some options at the end to make the final part right for you/your space.

How you can get PDFs for one cheap price:

I have compiled the first letters of this event in a convenient downloadable PDF if you prefer to print them out and have them all in one place.  And my printable paid patterns contain a lot more photo tutorials to help you if you need.

You can find the toys for all the letters in my Etsy Shop. I have them broken down into smaller parts, but have just uploaded the final huge part.

Part 1: A-F HERE ON MY ETSY.

Part 2:  the letters G-M

You can find Part 3 with the letters N-S

The last small part – Part 4 with the letters T-Z is now available.

If you’ve been waiting to purchase the PDFs until the end now is your chance!! I can’t even believe they are all finished or that I am giving away everything for this one small price.

MY ENTIRE COMPLETE SERIES PLUS A BUNCH OF EXTRAS IS NOW AVAILABLE.

There are OVER 60 patterns in that final bundle!!! 60+ toys patterns.

And MOST ALL of my PAID patterns contain way more photos and tutorials than what I can add to my blog post. I try to keep my fees very low.

This project was in my head as I was designing all of these letters and I’m so excited to get this series finished! Won’t you join me?  If you prefer to shop on Ravelry for your patterns I also have the entire alphabet PDF over there.

I will try to work on uploading these to Ravelry if you prefer Ravelry for your patterns, but it will be a while.  If you are familiar with Ravelry, you may know that I have to upload each one separately over there – I can’t list bundles together so each and every small toy must have it’s own page.  That will take me a while, but I will try to get it done.  I don’t believe I will be able to do it all this year.

I’m gonna give you some options at the end to make the final part right for you/your space.  Make sure to check out THE ORIGINAL POST to link hop to each one of the patterns here on my blog – there are at least two toys for EACH LETTER OF THE ALPHABET.

I have a new way for you to support my FREE PATTERNS!! I know many or most of you love supporting us makers – the truth is that is takes a long time to create a pattern and then write it and then edit it and get it proofed and tested – and then publish it – then you have to link it everywhere – it’s a lot of work, but us makers do what we do to share our love with you. And, if you have followed my blog, you may know that I do not run ads on my blog, so all my support comes from PDF purchases. Some of you don’t need to purchase the PDF of my patterns, but still want to say a quick Thank you – so, you can now support my blog and my work.

This pattern is intended for personal use only. This pattern -and all my patterns- are offered for free or a small fee to help support my family so please do not redistribute, sell, copy or use them in any way not in accordance with fairness.

UPDATE: F is for Fox: Dec 29, 2020

Happy New Year!!  I know it’s been a minute since I did a blog post, but I was enjoying some time off with family and some projects around my own home, but stay tuned because I have so much planned for 2021!!!

Materials:

Yarns: Baby F (Fox) was made with an entire ball of Crafter’s Secret Cotton in Papaya (3) and about half a ball of Crafter’s Secret Cotton Brown (03) and a scrap of white fur (Red Heart Hygge in Snow) and a small bit of cream cotton from my stash.  I used every bit of this papaya cotton ball – therefore, in the pattern I give instructions on the best way to work in case you run out of your main color at the end.  Baby W was made also with Crafter’s Secret Cotton in 10/Gray and a scrap of 4-ply worsted weight black yarn and a scrap ball of Yarn Bee Fur the Moment in Husky.  Same as above, I used every single bit of the gray cotton so please see notes about the order to work up your baby animals.

A note on using FUR Yarn:

Fur yarn is easy to work with if you DO NOT need to see your stitches.  You won’t really be able to clearly see the stitches.  You will need to feel them.  You Should/MUST use a stitch marker.  This yarn is also very forgiving and no mistakes will be seen.  The main thing with this yarn is to make sure you crochet all the numbers of stitches per round – so, just use your stitch marker and get the right number by the time you get back to it – you will NOT be able to see your stitches.  Just feel for them.

-Hook: I used a G/4mm hook for most of this pattern.  Any changes to this will be noted.

-Safety Eyes (or yarn to embroider if you choose) and needle to embroider face.  You can see in the picture above that for Baby F I used yarn for the face and for Baby W I used safety eyes.  This is to show you that either way you choose is fine.

-Stuffing.  I have used Poly-Fill brand stuffing, but feel free to use what you prefer.

– I don’t typically use Stitch markers, but if you do you will want those to keep track of your rounds.  As a “free” stitch marker you can loop a bright colored piece of scrap yarn through your stitch to act as a marker – then just pull it out when you get back around to it and move it up one row.  Easy marker!

Spiral Crochet:

I crochet in the “spiral” for this project and for most of my work.  This prevents the joining seam that can occur with crochet.   What that means is that you don’t join each round with a slip stitch and then chain 1, but rather keep on working the next stitch – the first one from the previous row.  It may help to use a stitch marker to designate the beginning of the previous round.  For example, if your round calls for 30 sc stitches, then sc 30 around, but instead of slip stitching to the first stitch and then chaining one, sc in the first stitch and keep on going for your next round.

TIP Counting:

I also tend to open the calculator on my phone and keep track of “rounds” and stitches by my calculator.  For example: if I need to do 4 rounds of 36 stitches I will do “4×36=144” on my calculator and then subtract as I go.  So, I might do 30 sc and stop (144-30) get up and do something and come back and so forth until I get done.  This keeps me on track and keeps me from having to use and move stitch markers.  I only advise this if you are good with counting and have no distractions.

Invisible Decrease:

Doing an invisible single crochet decrease is one of the best things I ever learned! There are many online tutorials on this so look up doing the invisible decrease single crochet online and you will not be sorry.  Essentially, you will be doing your single crochet decrease in only the front loops of the crochets being decreased.

Stitch Index:

Chain: Ch

Single Crochet: SC

Inc Sc: make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch as indicated

Invisible Decrease: inv. dec – this is an invisible single crochet decrease

HDC: half-double crochet

HDC Inc: increase in HDC

DC Inc: increase in DC

DC: double crochet

TR: treble crochet   *US Terms apply

This is one pattern for both Baby F and Baby W so please see modifications for each pattern.

In the PDF version of this pattern the modifications for each one are in different colors to help.

Head: This pattern starts at the back of the head and works toward the nose.

***This pattern is a modification of my Pink the Dragon pattern and as such I have left some of the photo tutorials from that pattern in this pattern – this is why some photos will not be the same color.

Ch 2 (you can also use a magic ring if that is your preferred method of starting a circle or amigurumi)

Round 1: 6 sc in second chain from hook (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (18)

Round 4: *1 sc in next two sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (24)

Round 5: *1 sc in next three sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (30)

Round 6: *1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (36)

Round 7: 1 sc in each stitch around (36)

Round 8: *1 sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (42)

Rounds 9-11: 1 sc in each stitch around working in a spiral (42)(42)(42)

Now start your decreases:

Round 12: *sc in each of the next 5 sc, dec sc* repeat around (36)

Round 13: sc in each stitch around (36)

Round 14: ***place a stitch marker here in the first stitch. *** sc in each of the next 20 sc, chain 10, slip stitch in marked first stitch, (see photos).  Chain 1 and sc in each stitch around (30)

Rounds 15-17: sc in each stitch around (30)(30)(30)

Round 18: *1 sc in next three sc, inv dec over the next 2 sc* repeat around (24)

***Change to off white in the last stitch for the face like if you are making this color change***

Round 19: Back Loop ONLY (BLO) sc in each stitch around (24)

Round 20: *sc 10, inv dec* repeat (22)

Round 21: *sc 9, inv dec* repeat (20)

Round 22: *sc 8, inv dec* repeat (18)

Round 23: *sc 7, inv dec* repeat (16)

Round 24: *sc 6, inv dec* repeat (14)

Round 25: *sc 5, inv dec* repeat (12)

Round 26: *sc 2, inv dec* repeat (9)

Finish off and leave a tail to sew closed.  Embroider the nose.

I am including this picture here for a good reason.  As I was working this pattern the first time, I was not paying super close attention and was really absorbed in my audiobook – so, after doing the nose and the face I realized that I did NOT have the neck opening positioned straight down so my face was crooked.  At this point you want to fold the face like in this photo with the neck hole straight down and mark where you want to put your face before proceeding.

Add eyes, eyebrows and any other face mods that you want and do here on the face before you continue.

Body:

Start body at back of head (see photo) – sc around piece *I got 29.  This part isn’t crucial – you may get a few more or a few less.  It is okay.  Just make sure your stitches are evenly spaced and don’t look puckered.  It should be around 30.

On the second round we are going to decrease to get 20 sc.  You want to decrease this round evenly from whatever you had on the previous row. Just decrease around using inv. dec to get 20 stitches.  So, for me since I had 29, I did (1 sc, 1 dec) around.

Rounds 3-4: Sc in each stitch around (20)(20)

Start stuffing head and stuff as you go.

Round 5: Increase this round by 4 evenly spaced stitches to end up with 24.

Rounds 6-8: sc around (24)(24)(24)

Round 9: *1 sc in next three sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (30)

Rounds 10-12: sc around (30)(30)(30)

Round 13: *1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (36)

Round 14: sc around (36)

Round 15: *1 sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (42)

Round 16: sc around (42)

Round 17: *1 sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (48)

Rounds 18-22: sc around (48)

Now continue with the body decreases and stuff as you go.

***Start Decreasing

Round 23: *sc in each of the next 6 sc, dec sc* repeat around (42)

Round 24: *sc in each of the next 5 sc, dec sc* repeat around (36)

Round 25: *sc in each of the next 4 sc, dec sc* repeat around (30)

Round 26: *sc in each of the next 3 sc, dec sc* repeat around (24)

Round 27: *sc in each of the next 2 sc, dec sc* repeat around (18)

Round 28: *sc in the next sc, dec sc* repeat around (12)

Round 29: sc dec around (6)

FO and sew opening closed.

Tummy Patch

For the tummy patch you will chain 1 and turn after each row.  I used my H/5mm hook for this part with the fur yarns.

Baby F has the white fur yarn mentioned in the materials and Baby W has the brown.

Chain 5.  Sc in second chain from hook and across (4)

Row 2: Sc across (4)

Row 3: Inc, sc, sc, Inc (6)

Rows 4-5: sc across (6)

Row 6: Inc, sc (4), Inc (8)

Row 7: sc across (8)

Row 8: sc across (8)

Row 9: inc, sc (6), inc (10)

Row 10: sc across (10)

Row 11: inc, sc (8), inc (12) Baby W’s brown fur worked up larger and was plenty big at this point so I did my decreases here – so, rows 16-18 *depending on your yarn you might have enough belly fur here.  Due to the nature of the fur for Baby W, I also did not feel it necessary to do a sc border around.  I also chose to sew the tummy patch down with the gray body color instead of the fur.

Rows 12-15: sc across (12)

Row 16: dec, sc (8), dec (10)

Row 17: dec, sc (6), dec (8)

Row 18: dec, sc (4), dec (6)

Sc around the entire piece to even out the edges and hide your yarn if you carried it up the side. Leave a long tail for sewing when you finish off.

****THIS PART IS IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH ONLY ONE BALL OF COTTON LIKE I WAS ****

It was more important to me that my ears matched my body color instead of the full legs.  Since I already planned to start the legs in a darker color, I thought it best to do the ears completely in my body color and then use the leftover cotton to finish the tops of the legs for better/invisible sewing to the body.  I was not worried about the tail – I either planned to do it fully in the fur yarn or add the body color to the top depending on how far my yarn went.   Therefore, I am putting the ears here next and then the legs and the tail last.  For the legs/arms, I chose to do only the top rows in the body color and used my entire ball of cotton for this.  So, you may find that you don’t have enough of the body color if you work a different than I do.

Ears (make 2) – USE YOUR H/5mm HOOK

These are made in rounds, but your increases are a little different than standard.  For these increases, you will just evenly increase around by two stitches for most rounds.  For example, from 6 to 8 sc you will do this: (sc, sc, inc)* and from 8 to 10 is (sc, sc, sc, inc)* repeat this sequence.  At the end you go from 24 to 36 and this is the traditional (sc 4, inc)*

Row/Round Stitch Count/Number
1 6
2 8
3 10
4 12
5 14
6 16
7 18
8 20
9-13 Work on stitch in each around (20)

*FO leaving long tail.  After attaching the inner fur layer, you will gather in half at the bottom and fold up to sew

This picture is from my large Fox, but it’s the same for Baby F.  The inside ear fur patch is made in rows and you will also use your H/5mm hook.  Baby F has the white fur yarn and these instructions are for this type of fur yarn.  Baby W has a different method below this one.

Chain 2.  Sc 1 in the 2nd chain from the hook. Chain 1 and turn.

Sc 2 in the sc. Chain 1 and turn.

Inc, Inc (4) Chain 1 and turn.

Inc, sc 2, inc (6) Chain 1 and turn* now and for the rest of the rows.

Now, for the next rows work straight with no increases.  I did 4 more rows.  Hold this up to the ear to help get the size right and adjust as needed.  Sew to ear before folding ears up and attaching to the head. Fold the bottom of the ear in half to close it up and sew starting about 9-10 rows back from the eyes.

Baby W uses the yarn in the above photo that was leftover from my large Fox, but because this ear is smaller and this type of yarn is super bulky, for Baby W I found that embroidering the inside ear hair was better.  I just pulled it only my yarn needle and pulled it back and forth in rows and tied it on the inside.

Feet/Legs (make two):

In my examples,

Baby F has legs that are mostly made in the brown

Baby W has legs that are mostly made in black

Ch 2 (you can also use a magic ring if that is your preferred method of starting a circle or amigurumi)

Round 1: 6 sc in second chain from hook (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (18)

Round 4: *1 sc in next two sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (24)

Rounds 5-7: 1 sc in each stitch around (24)(24)(24)

Start your Decreases and stuff as you go.  Stuff how it is easiest for you.  I usually stuff around my 18 sc round.  Stuff the feet firm, but don’t over stuff the legs.  I didn’t add any stuffing to my legs.

Round 8: *sc in next 2 sc, inv dec over next 2* repeat around (18)

Round 9: *sc in next sc, inv dec over next 2 sc* repeat around (12)

Round 10: sc in each sc around (12)

Round 11: repeat round 8 (9)

Single crochet in each stitch around until you reach the length you desire for your legs.  I ended up with 15 total rows in my example and changed back to the body color with 4 rows left at the end.

Finish off, but leave a long tail for sewing to the body.

Arms (make two):

Ch 2 (you can also use a magic ring if that is your preferred method of starting a circle or amigurumi)

Round 1: 6 sc in second chain from hook (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: *1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (15)

Rounds 4-6:  1 sc in each stitch around (15)(15)(15)

Start your Decreases and stuff as you go.  Don’t overstuff your arms.  I only add stuffing to the bottoms in the “hands” and leave the arm free.

Round 7: *sc in next 3 sc, inv dec over next 2* repeat around (12)

Rounds 8: (sc dec over the next 2 stitches) x 2, then sc in the next 8 sc (10)

Rounds 9-18: sc in each sc around (10) *I changed color here back to my main/body color

Rounds 19-22: sc in each sc around (10)

Finish off but leave a long tail for sewing to the body.

Tail:

For the tail, I have used the Fur yarn mentioned above and then switched back to my cotton yarn at the end for Baby F (just the very top), but for Baby W, I was completely out of cotton, so I used just the fur for the tail.  Also, for Baby W, I chose to just crochet a tube – so, I did a starting circle of 6sc and then just worked one sc in each sc until it was the length that I wanted.  This option is a good choice if you are using a super bulky yarn.

I used my I/J size hook with this yarn. I for the white and J for the brown.  Use what feels best for yarn.  I wasn’t stuffing the tail so fiber coming out was not as issue for me.

Baby F: Chain 2 and make 6 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook.  Now, each round gets one increase per round.

Round 2: 7

Round 3: 8

Round 4: 9 etc.

Move your stitch marker up as you finish the last stitch of each round so you can make sure you are increasing with the right number of increases.

I kept increasing every round by 1sc until I got up to 18sc. After 18sc, switch back to regular amigurumi increase and go to 24sc. [this formula is (sc, sc, sc, inc)* repeat]  So, you will have 18sc and then 24sc, repeat 24 sc on the next round, then decrease to 18sc [sc, sc, inv dec], then 12, [sc, inv dec], then 6 sc around [dec around], and then repeat one sc in each stitch around until you reach the length you desire.

For Baby F, I placed the tail between rounds 12-13 FROM THE BOTTOM but for Baby W I placed the tail between rounds 9-10 FROM THE BOTTOM.   Just center it and sew where you find it most pleasing.

Will you be joining in the fun? I’d love for you to make all of this with me, but if not pick a few and make it with me.
