This whole year – 2019 – I have set a goal to USE MY STASH! I know many of us yarn collectors feel the same way. In addition to this goal, I am running an A-Z Challenge over on my Facebook Page – also called The Burgundy Basket – where my Facebook friends are making recommendations for each letter of the alphabet to challenge me and get me out of my comfort zone. This project incorporated A for “Afghans” and F for “Flamingo” and “Flower.” I did a little series of flamingo items that went together, and this was the little afghan that I did. I needed a project that started in the center because I wasn’t sure how far the yarn scraps would go that I pulled out of my stash pile. So, my plan was to start in the center and just work until I ran out of yarn. This afghan turned out to be about 54″ across.

Often in those adventures, I am fortunate enough to score giant bags of new yarn at unbelievable low prices – but what this means is that my stash has grown out of control and I am running out of storage space. So, I am de-stashing this year! I have done several de-stash projects this year. Take a look at these:
For this project, I wanted an afghan that worked up quick and used my yarns cohesively -so, I used my S/19.00mm crochet hook and these colors from leftover skeins of yarns: flamingo, red, a raspberry/wine color, white, black, gray and cream.

This is how I transitioned them:
I used 3 strands at once and started with flamingo, black and white. My flamingo yarn ran out first so I then added in my raspberry color. My raspberry ran out next and I joined my red. Then my white ran out and I joined my cream color (all the while still holding 3 strands at once). My black ran out and I joined my gray so that at the end I was holding gray, cream and red. ***I did save a little from each skein before it was completely gone to use in the tassels. Work over your joining tales and then weave them in with your needle a few times before clipping.
I chose to work in half double crochet (hdc) for this afghan and worked in the round. I used a traditional stitch increase. I started with a chain 2 and then placed 6 hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook. *when I work in the round I do not join my rounds, but simply continue to work in a spiral, but what that means when working in hdc is that you have a lot of ground to cover between the last hdc of the first round and the starting hdc on that round-so, for the FIRST stitch only for round 2, I make a sc, then a hdc in the same stitch.
Your second round will be: sc, hdc in the same stitch then place two hdc in each of the other 5 hdc around for a total of 12 stitches – 1 sc and 11 hdc. DO NOT JOIN NOW but continue to work in the spiral. There is not as big of a jog now at the start of round 3 so just work in hdc for the rest of the afghan.
Working in the CONTINUOUS Round Instruction sheet:
*I do not join and chain but continue to work in the next stitch. Use a stitch marker for this so you don’t lose your place.
This pattern goes up to your 15th round of increasing and stops because I don’t think you need more to get the gist of it – just continue in the established pattern with one extra stitch between increases each round. For my afghan, I ran out of yarn after the 25th increase round.
Starting/Increasing:
Chain 2.
Half double crochet 6 in the second chain from the hook and work over your starting tail.
Your second round will be: sc, hdc in the same stitch then place two hdc in each of the other 5 hdc around for a total of 12 stitches – 1 sc and 11 hdc.
After getting done with all the stitches for round 2, pull the starting tail to cinch up the opening. You can now trim that tail or weave it in or just leave it if it will be on the inside of your work.
You want to move your stitch marker to the last stitch of each round so you know when you get to the end.
Round 3: (Make 1 hdc in next stitch, make 2 hdc in the next stitch) repeat around (18)
Round 4: (Make 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, make 2 hdc in the next stitch) repeat around (24)
Round 5: (Make 1 hdc in next 3 stitches, make 2 hdc in the next stitch) repeat around (30)
Round 6: (Make 1 hdc in next 4 stitches, make 2 hdc in the next stitch) repeat around (36)
Round 7: (Make 1 hdc in next 5 stitches, make 2 hdc in the next stitch) repeat around (42)
Round 8: (Make 1 hdc in next 6 stitches, make 2 hdc in the next stitch) repeat around (48)
Round 9: (Make 1 hdc in next 7 stitches, make 2 hdc in the next stitch) repeat around (54)
