UPDATE 2022: This is one of my first patterns and when I wrote it, I wrote it the way that I like to jot my patterns down. I have now updated this pattern to a fully written out, beginner friendly version. I have also included some extra details. If you can’t make sense of the chart form below, please find an inexpensive copy HERE IN MY ETSY SHOP or ON RAVELRY IN MY STORE.
Meet Haybelly the Horse!
He is so magnificent!! He is glorious! He is one of the first big patterns that I wrote and the start of my Farm Series that I’ve worked on this year. When I started writing him, I knew I wanted him BIG! I wanted him to be the size that kids can cuddle and hug and drag around the floor – he is all that and more at almost 30″ tall! He started me on this blog journey and inspired all my Farm Series and my pattern for Lord Longtooth Green the Dino/Dragon that you can see HERE for Free on my blog or HERE on Etsy and also HERE on my Ravelry.
If you prefer Ravelry for your patterns you can find Haybelly right HERE on Ravelry.
The free blog patterns don’t contain all my hints/tips or photographs like my paid patterns, but they do give the basics.
My Paid for patterns also contain a FREE Cheat Sheet that help you with the increases and decreases for the numbers in my chart.
I want to say thank you for all who stop by to support my patterns and my blog. I have chosen to NOT do annoying ads on my blog and truly offer FREE patterns, but please – if you love my patterns and want to say a little thank you- or just have some good small business karma support points- a purchase now and then or a visit to any of my affiliate links really helps. It keeps this blog going so I can continue to offer free patterns for all to enjoy. I also purchase a pattern now and then or visit an affiliate link from my favorite blogs and designers. Thank you

Ginger the Goat was the pattern before her – #10! – and she can be found HERE. Before that, I released Polly and Puff Chicken. Polly and Puff are the 9th in my Farm Series and on Etsy right HERE. . Amigurumi just makes me so happy – each animal has their own personality at the end and making them is so joyful!
Did you meet Digger the Donkey? I also have Barley the Beagle and Butterbean the Bunny with a free addition to her pattern for her baby, Clover. And the three patterns before those were the sweet Dixie the Duckling, Cocoa the Cow, and Peaches the Pig. And don’t miss Lambert the Llama – he’s my most visited pattern to date here on my blog.

UPDATE: October, 2020: see THIS POST for an update to make a smaller baby version of my horse.
The update is a fully written out pattern.
Materials:
Haybelly uses an assortment of yarns from my stash. I prefer to use Caron One-Pounder yarns for my toys and that is mostly what this is. Use what you have. My body, head and ears are one color and the arms/legs another color and hands and feet are all different. Use what you have. I did use a variegated yarn for the mane and tail. This would be a super cute girl horse too with lots of pink!
Hook : I used a G hook for this pattern except for the ears. I used my I hook for them.
-These are the hooks I use exclusively now. They have helped end any hand pain I had.
-Safety Eyes or buttons (or yarn to embroider if you choose) and needle to embroider face.
The eyes that I have used on Haybelly are no longer available from Amazon and I like the big size – the 18-24mm size on my big amigurumi – so, these are the ones that I am ordering now. They are a little higher, but have free shipping. I will update my post for my review of these after I get them. **I love these eyes! I do recommend them if you have to order online.
You can also NEVER go wrong with Suncatcher eyes. I have used many Suncatcher eyes and these are beautiful. I’ve just ordered this exact set so some of my future animals will have these. These come in assorted large sizes so click on the size you want if ordering:
I also really needed new large eyes, so I have just ordered these 20mm as well:
And these are the Suncatcher eyes that I have used. They are a little smaller than the ones I have used lately at 18mm, but still better than smaller ones for my large amigurumi. You can NOT go wrong with Suncatcher eyes. They are all really fabulous!
-Stuffing. I have used Poly-Fill brand stuffing, but feel free to use what you prefer.
– I don’t use Stitch markers, but if you do you will want those to keep track of your rounds. As a “free” stitch marker you can loop a bright colored piece of scrap yarn through your stitch to act as a marker – then just pull it out when you get back around to it and move it up one row. Easy marker!
If you are new to crochet or just want to upgrade your supplies this is a fabulous kit. I have this kit – it comes with all you see and it a great price for the quality.
Stitch Glossary:
Chain: Ch
Single Crochet: SC
Inc Sc: make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch as indicated
Invisible Decrease: inv. dec. – this is an invisible single crochet decrease
Hdc: Half double crochet
Dc: double crochet
Tr: treble crochet
Slip Stitch: sl st
FO: finish off
This is a simplified pattern – a chart with the numbers – you need to have knowledge of crochet amigurumi and how to do rounds and increases to read. If you do it will be pretty straight forward. **all of my paid for patterns come with a “cheat sheet” to help with this part.
I start my work with a chain 2 and then sc in second chain from hook, but you can also start with a magic ring if you prefer that start.
This pattern starts with nose and then changes color to head and then the body is worked. I will make notes along the way to assist with this.
Nose: ( I used a Cream color. I used Caron One Pounder in off white.)
This pattern begins at the front of the nose and then changes color and continues to head. FO is on back of the head. After that I like to do the ears and sew them on and place the head in my work area to watch me as I finish the rest – this will cause you to smile =)

Body: I used the same color from the back of my head for the body. I feel that you need to probably use the same color from back of head as you do the body to make your sewing blend in and be invisible. It will require good sewing for this head because it is large. You do not want to do all this work and then have visible sewing stitches. The body starts from the bottom up and we leave an opening at top for the neck. You want to pin your head in place and make sure to stuff the neck VERY well before final stitches to support the head. This large head needs lots of support.

Feet/Legs (make two):
These are big round feet. They are big. I wanted them to really pop so I chose to use different bright colors, but you can choose to use all the same color or even make the feet/legs the same color. These are big! If you want your feet/hands to be smaller just don’t do my final increases and start the decrease instead. They will still be fabulous! I also stuff the feet/hands VERY well and not so much in the arms and legs.

Strip between horses eyes/ Face piece:
**this piece can be any color, but remember you need to sew this on and hiding your sewing stitches is harder when your pieces are different colors. Leave a long tail to start for sewing/tying off when you get back around.
This piece is worked in ROWS and you will Ch 1 and turn at the end of each row.

Now, you will sew the face patch on. You can see in this photo where mine is. It goes from the top of the nose up to the top of head just behind ears. Don’t be overly concerned with the top part because you will be hiding most of it with the mane. For the mane, just cut your strips of yarn and weave into the head like doll hair. I did all between the ears and a little in front of ears and in back of the head. I also used a variegated brown yarn scrap ball for my mane.
And that is it! I’d love to see all your finished animals over @theburgundybasket on IG AND DON’T FORGET MY BIG PRIZE GIVEAWAY JUST FOR MAKING ANY OF MY FARM ANIMALS. See the link above at the start of this post.
Thank you so much for purchasing my pattern. I would love to see your work so please tag me @theburgundybasket on IG #haybellythehorse
Just as a side note: I run a local business at an artisan shop and also my Etsy shop, but after I finished Haybelly, I could not part with him. He sits in my office and keeps me company each day – he and Lord Longtooth Green. I love them tremendously and they will always live with me <3
And I like to bring you some of my favorite things! I am a big “amazoner” and these are some things that are my recent favorites or gifts or things I have used in my local business.
